What does psychoanalytic mean?

Psychoanalytic (or psychodynamic) are technical words therapists use to define a range of therapies where the relationships you have had in earlier life are understood to have formed you and influenced who you are today. In these kinds of therapy childhood experiences are highly valued and may be explored as part of the process of self-understanding.

Psychodynamic implies that there is an unconscious dimension to who we are – a reserve of forgotten or hidden feelings and experiences. Understanding how these impact on you now, talking them through, helps to resolve them and therefore frees you up to live more fully.
